Ways to help in August

August is a big harvest month at the garden and we're all busy bringing in the produce. For August we're taking it to a new level by preparing lunch for Fall City Community Food Pantry clients, in addition to continued work in the garden.

Lunch for Food Pantry clients

Help prepare lunch for Food Pantry clientsOne of the purposes of the learning garden is to support the Fall City Community Food Pantry by contributing our garden produce. This month we have another way to support and contribute to the Food Pantry by providing a lunch for food pantry clients. This lunch provides a special opportunity for volunteers! We welcome your help with preparing and serving a simple meal.

The Food Pantry supports community members by providing groceries twice a month to those in need. Many of their clients are working parents with children. In addition to groceries, the volunteers offer lunch on those two days a month, which is well appreciated by the recipient families. However, the Food Pantry lunch volunteers take some time off in the summer. We at the Learning Garden have offered to provide one lunch in August to cover for them.

I helped Sue of the Food Pantry with one of her meals, and really enjoyed it! There is something very special about preparing and sharing a meal with others. Please consider helping us provide this meal.

We can use help with food prep, clean up, and donations of simple homemade dessert (cookies or brownies). Much of the prep work can be done in advance. Set up for the lunch begins about 11:30 A.M. and clean up completed by 2:00 P.M.

Hands-on learning

We also welcome your help in the garden! The very hot summer has been great for the tomato plants but hard on the lettuce and the few regular gardeners. Please join us if you can for our usual hands on learning/work parties on Wed. Aug 5 from 10:30am to 12:30pm and Wed. Aug 19 from 5 to 7pm. If you would like to help in the garden but aren't able to at those times, let us know, and we will find a time to work with you. Even 45 minutes of garden help can make a big difference to us!

Or just stop by to see how the garden is doing this summer! We're planting a native edible hedgerow, we have a tiny pumpkin/squash patch, and the tomato plants look great! It is time to start planting for fall and winter harvest.

Thank you for your support of the Learning Garden and I hope to see you soon!
